Woking Tall Buildings Panel; 2018-present

Design South East – Woking Tall Buildings Panel

Like so many places close to London, Woking is facing pressure for development and is taking on the challenge of accommodating higher density development in the context of a traditional town centre. Development of the town centre is already underway, with the three towers of the Victoria Square development marking just the start of a significant period of transformation of the town centre.

We have been asked by Woking Borough Council to design review proposed high density developments in the town centre, supporting the borough in its ambition to go tall and create a high-density hub at this sustainable location in the heart of Surrey.

Of course, any policy that encourages tall buildings brings with it design challenges, particularly around the nature of the public realm and ground floor usage, as well as townscape, views and microclimate. So we are also helping the council think about how a high-rise town centre could be planned for through a new public realm framework. To start this, we took council members on a study tour of King’s Cross.
