Online Learning 3: Designing for the climate emergency
As we learn more about our individual role in the climate emergency we increasingly change our everyday behaviour – bringing our own keep cup, carrying a water bottle and our own shopping bags. This webinar explores how we can build on this duty of care collectively, toward fundamental change in the built environment.
This half-day webinar is aimed at Kent Design members who do not specialise in sustainability but would like to learn more about how to put sustainability at the heart of what they do, conscious of local climate emergency declarations.
With the NPPF definitions of climate change adaptation and mitigation in mind, learners can expect to look at fundamental approaches to designing for the climate emergency, considering climate adaptation and mitigation measures in placemaking and at an architectural scale.
Our guest speakers share their recommendations for climate-responsive design, considering:
- What are the most important/urgent things we can address through design? What are the quick wins – if any?
- What design decisions can have the biggest impact on the sustainability of placemaking and architecture?
- What can we do as individuals without having to wait for policy implementation or governance?
- What conversations do we need drive organisationally?
The NPPF Annex 2: Glossary defines climate change adaptation and mitigation as follows:
Climate change adaptation:
Adjustments made to natural or human systems in response to the actual or anticipated impacts of climate change, to mitigate harm or exploit beneficial opportunities.
Climate change mitigation:
Action to reduce the impact of human activity on the climate system, primarily through reducing greenhouse gas (including CO2) emissions.

However, there will be an opportunity for further delegates to view a recording of the webinar and participate in the independent study. So feel free to provide additional names beyond the 2 places per member and we will be in touch to let them know how they can participate.
