On Thursday 5th July DSE led a group of individuals from the private sector + Kent & Medway local authorities on a study tour of council led housing developments in North London. This guided tour took the group to two major developments; the Kings Crescent Estate and the Colville Estate, both situated in the London Borough of Hackney. This study visit was very topical, as only the night before the Kings Crescent Estate, part of the estate regeneration masterplan developed in collaboration with Henley Halebrown and Karakusevic Carson Architects was awarded the NLA Mayor’s Prize 2018.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan quoted: “The Kings Crescent Estate is a great example of how estate regeneration can preserve existing diverse communities and support them through periods of change. An example of combining sensitive refurbishment together with new buildings and great design, which has created a neighbourhood people can be proud of.”

On 21 June the Kings Crescent Estate also received an RIBA National Award, click here to read more.

The group then took a guided tour around the Colville Estate where they heard from the design teams and those within the Council, including Ken Rorrison, Regeneration Design Manager, London Borough of Hackney, and Chloe Phelps, Head of Design at Croydon’s Brick by Brick development company.

To finish off the day there were talks and discussion with our contributors at Karakusevic Carson Architects in South East London where the group was lucky enough to be given a tour of their studios, including a room full of architectural models.
