Built environment professionals have a unique role to play in ensuring a just transition to Net Zero Carbon, which maximises the co-benefits of improved health, housing, and environmental quality. In October, Design South East delivered an online Lunch & Learn Briefing to fifty attendees exploring the concept of Net Zero Carbon and the big changes needed in the UK to achieve this target by 2050.

The message of the briefing was clear: it is possible to achieve Net Zero Carbon using existing technology, and the investment of time and money is a huge opportunity to improve our places and quality of life. The presentation was followed by a spirited Q&A session in which attendees explored the challenges in implementing the required changes. This event was delivered by Design South East as part of the Kent Design Learning Programme.

What is Net Zero Carbon and how do we get there? On 12th October, we delivered a Lunch & Learn briefing exploring the concept of Net Zero Carbon and the big changes needed in the UK to achieve this target by 2050. The message of the briefing was clear: it is possible to achieve Net Zero Carbon using existing technology and the investment of time and money is a huge opportunity to improve our places and quality of life. Built environment professionals have a unique role to play in ensuring a just transition to net zero carbon, which maximises the co-benefits of improved health, housing and environmental quality.

The presentation was followed by a spirited Q&A session, in which attendees explored the challenges in implementing the required changes. How can we ensure the private sector delivers sustainable development? Should local authorities or central government lead? Retrofitting existing buildings can be tricky – how do we ensure success on a large scale?

Although these questions do not have easy answers, we look forward to exploring them further in future learning events!
