Design Code Training for Brighton and Hove City Council

Design South East – Design Code Training for Brighton and Hove City Council

Training in design and design coding for a cross-departmental group of officers

Brief

Design South East was commissioned to deliver a full day training and workshop event for a cross-departmental group of officers from Brighton and Hove City Council (BHCC). The objective was to help officers from different teams and directorates to understand the value of design codes – and of good design – in enabling them to deliver on their various objectives and agendas, to understand the priorities for design coding and gather baseline data to inform the development of a design code through the process.

Project

A training session set the policy context for the development of design codes. We drew on first-hand knowledge of and learnings from the National Model Design Code pilot and Pathfinder programmes, and explored the 10 characteristics of well-designed places, as set out in the National Design Guide, and on which the NMDC is founded. A walkabout and place audit enabled officers to identify key design issues and priorities which might inform the development of a place-specific area-wide design code.
